Trying to wrap my head around this, but Initiation Dream (Colin Trask and the Wolf Shifters) was written as long as fifteen years ago. To look back, one of the changes in that time period that affected the book was the cell phone. Cell phones were not everywhere 15 years ago, but were increasing in popularity and, obviously, have evolved into a world-wide-phenomena.
I had wanted to make sure this carry-around tool was not available for my native characters. I wrote into the story that a constant buzzing sound could be heard from the cell phones by these Wolf Shifters, forcing them to not have them, want them or be around them. This helped contribute to a crucial time where communication becomes difficult among the ally tribe members.
Now, since EVERYONE has one, it was hard to comprehend a group of people who didn’t own one. I made a creative choice to keep the hearing disfunction in the story.
So, I will leave you with this, fellow cell phone owners: just image a constant, evident ring in your ears, or maybe the consistent sound of bees buzzing close by. You very well might not like that either.
Hey, take a look at Initiation Dream. It’s a lot more than just bee-buzzing sound effects. In fact, you may even be able to read it on your cell phone;)
